Francisco Varela, une pensée actuelle

Tout commença avec l’idée d’organiser un colloque d’une semaine consacrée au travail scientifique et à la pensée philosophique de Francisco Varela, ainsi qu’à son ancrage dans le bouddhisme à Cerisy-la-Salle, cet endroit unique en Normandie où eurent lieu tant d’événements culturels internationaux depuis des décennies, en y adjoignant — le lieu s’y prêtant remarquablement — des performances d’artistes en soirée. On voulait par là témoigner de l’enaction (concept varelien s’il en est) de sa pensée et de l’incarnation authentique de sa prise de parole.

Le colloque devait avoir lieu en juin dernier, en 2020, mais la vie de la planète en décida autrement : nous nous adaptâmes — fidèles en cela à la « dérive naturelle » de Francisco, selon son expression singulière dans L’inscription corporelle de l’esprit (1991), dont nous célébrons d’ailleurs cette année le 30^e anniversaire de sa parution — et le colloque fut reporté aux 19-25 mai 2021, si proche du jour exact de sa mort, le 28 mai 2001, qu’il paraissait impossible de le reporter à nouveau…

Et pourtant… La journée d’hommage qui aura lieu le 20 mai 2021 en distanciel honorera la mémoire de Francisco et offrira une « mise en bouche » ou un « coup d’envoi » (au choix) à un colloque à nouveau reporté, et qui se tiendra cette fois espérons-le entièrement « en chair et en os » (selon l’expression chère à Husserl) entre le 13 et le 19 août 2022.

Avec cette première journée d’hommage du 20 mai prochain, nous souhaitons faire revivre la pensée de Francisco et son rayonnement intellectuel international en donnant la parole aux personnes qui l’ont bien connu, amies et amis, collaboratrices et collaborateurs scientifiques et philosophes, ainsi que méditants bouddhistes. Pour cela, nous projetterons aussi de courtes vidéos témoignant des contextes de vie dans lesquels son travail s’est déployé et a mûri, au gré de ses multiples interactions, tout à la fois scientifiques et interpersonnelles. Remarquablement, sa présence à Cerisy à différents moments de sa carrière et, en tout premier lieu, lors du célèbre colloque « L’auto-organisation : de la physique au politique », en 1981, ouvrit un programme de recherche auquel la recherche de Francisco puisa nombre de ses inspirations et contribua tout autant de façon insigne.

It all started with the project of organizing a week-long Conference dedicated to Francisco Varela’s scientific work, philosophical thought and Buddhist anchorage at Cerisy-la-salle, a longstanding famous place in Normandy, France, for cultural international events, along with artists’ performances in the evenings. All this being meant to attest to the genuine « enaction » (his innovative concept) of his thought and to the true embodiment of his words.

This Conference was to take place last July, 2020, but the life of the planet decided otherwise : we adapted — faithful to Francisco’s « natural drift » (a remarkable expression in The Embodied Mind, 1991, the 30^th anniversary of which we also celebrate this year) — and the Conference was postponed to 19-25 May, 2021, so near to the very date of his passing, on the 28^th of May, that it seemed impossible to postpone again…

But yet… The Tribute Day which will take place on the 20^th of May 2021 as a visio-event will honor Francisco’s memory and offer an appetizer or kick-off (according to the metaphor you prefer) to the anew postponed Conference, which will take place hopefully entirely « in flesh and blood » (Husserl’s expression) this time between 13-19 August, 2022.

During this first Tribute Day, we want to embody Francisco’s thought and his international intellectual vibrancy by giving voice to some persons who knew him well as friends, scientific and philosophical collaborators, Buddhist meditators, and by projecting short videos showing some of the most important life-contexts of his work and scientific interpersonal interactions. And to begin with, his presence at Cerisy at various moments of his career, namely first for the famous Conference « L’auto-organisation : de la physique au politique (1981) » : a seminal research program, which Francisco emblematized so genuinely.
