DESCRIPTION:Fort de trois recueils de poésie\, trois romans\, un ouvrage sur la poésie ainsi que des collaborations avec des artistes ayant donné lieu à quatre livres d’art\, Ben Lerner est aujourd’hui l’un des écrivains américains les plus importants de sa génération. \nMême si la poésie de l’auteur et ses collaborations avec des artistes ont été accueillies avec enthousiasme par la critique\, le large succès qu’il connaît dans le monde entier est principalement dû à ses romans\, qui ont généré un nombre considérable d’articles scientifiques ou de presse depuis la parution de Leaving the Atocha Station en 2011. Ces romans sont remarquables non seulement dans la manière dont ils bousculent les conventions liées à la distinction entre le factuel et le fictif\, l’Histoire et la fable\, à des niveaux aussi bien formels que thématiques\, mais également en ce qu’ils opèrent des ruptures dans la matière même du texte\, incorporant souvent dans un contexte fictionnel des poèmes\, des essais\, ou bien\, en une occasion\, une nouvelle\, tous déjà publiés sous le nom de « Ben Lerner ». Les romans se prêtent ainsi à des opérations de recyclage ou de réappropriation qui viennent brouiller les notions habituelles d’autorité et d’identité\, et briser les cloisons de l’espace de fiction. \nDe telles tendances traversent toute l’œuvre de Lerner\, qui comme on l’a noté\, prend souvent la forme de collaborations avec d’autres écrivains ou artistes visuels\, et met en évidence le mélange des genres à travers différentes formes d’écritures. L’auteur ne travaille pas simplement des genres distincts mais force le lecteur à considérer à nouveaux frais la définition de ces derniers et les objectifs visés par ces définitions. \nDe même\, les spéculations de l’auteur sur la « virtualité » de la poésie ont pour but de remettre en question la conception du poème comme forme concrète\, achevée ou objet total. Elles évoquent en cela le « poème sériel » de Jack Spicer ou Robert Duncan\, tandis que les dialogues entre prose et poésie que tisse l’auteur entre ses œuvres peuvent s’apparenter à une forme de prosimetrum autobiographique\, qui rappelle les grands projets littéraires qui virent le jour à la fin du XIXe siècle et fleurirent avec le modernisme (avec Charles Baudelaire\, Walter Benjamin\, Rainer Maria Rilke\, Marcel Proust et Virginia Woolf\, parmi d’autres). Parallèlement\, l’œuvre de Lerner met des préoccupations d’ordre formel et théorique en relation directe avec des questions qui relèvent du sociétal\, de l’amitié\, et ainsi de constructions concrètes de communautés\, de formes d’activisme et d’engagement collectif. \nCe colloque a pour ambition de traiter de l’ensemble des écrits et des entreprises esthétiques de Ben Lerner depuis la publication de son premier volume de poésie\, The Lichtenberg Figures (2004).
